Cops fired over cannabis use remain sidelined despite court ruling, lawyer says
A state appellate court earlier this month sided with two Jersey City cops who say they shouldn’t have been fired for their off-duty cannabis use, but it’s unknown what the next steps are in this yearslong fight over New Jersey’s marijuana legalization law. A spokesman for James Solomon, a Democrat who became the city’s new mayor in January, said the city is reviewing the policies of Solomon’s predecessor, Steve Fulop, who argued that federal law prevents armed police officers from using cannabis at any time. But the officers’ lawyer, Michael Rubas, said the city has refused to return them to their old jobs despite several rulings that they should be reinstated. |

Before the RCMP could leave Potlotek, residents had blocked in several police vehicles. As a result, the RCMP retrieved their guns from the vehicles and walked out of the community to waiting cars that drove some of the officers away. |

Cannabis raids cause trauma, fear and distress, says Potlotek chief
Before last Thursday, Potlotek First Nation was known for its significant history as a sacred gathering place for the Mi’kmaq people for centuries. Chapel Island, just off the shores of Potlotek, served as a central location for spiritual and political gatherings long before European colonization. Chiefs from surrounding areas would meet there to assign hunting and fishing territories, settle disputes, and govern their people, all under the leadership of the district chief. But today, the tiny Mi’kmaq community on the shores of the Bras d’Or Lakes is neither peaceful nor able to settle a dispute that blew wide open when RCMP raided a cannabis shop last week, ramming the door down and breaking windows. |

I Was a Cop Who Enforced Marijuana Laws. Now I’m Speaking Out.
I started researching crime statistics, effective policing, community-based alternatives, and how other countries approach law enforcement. The conclusion I reached surprised me: I began to feel that much of what we were doing relied on outdated methodologies, often created the issues we claimed to enforce, and that cannabis laws were rooted in racist ideology while functioning largely as a revenue stream for courts. |
